England legend Sir Bobby Charlton passes away, aged 86

England and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton died in the early hours of this morning, aged 86.

He enjoyed a 17-year spell with United, where he won three league titles, a European Cup and an FA Cup. For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals, and of course, the 1966 World Cup.

Sir Bobby, who was diagnosed with dementia in November 2020, died surrounded by his family, who passed their thanks to everyone who had loved him or contributed to his care.

Erik ten Hag’s current team wore black armbands for this evening’s Premier League game at Sheffield United, with both teams’ fans applauding ahead of kick-off.

Unparalleled record of achievement

A Manchester United statement read that Bobby was a “hero to millions” around the world, adding: “He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.

“His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.”

He was honoured with a statue of himself, George Best and Denis Law which stands outside Old Trafford. The men scored 665 goals between them for United, and, between 1964 and 1968, all won the coveted European Footballer of the Year award.

Sympathies

“The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with Bobby’s wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him.”

Charlton’s older brother Jack, who died in July 2020, and their fellow World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, who passed away in October 2020, had also both been diagnosed with dementia.
