T20 World Cup: England demolish Oman in record-breaking chase

Records tumbled as England sprang to life at the T20 World Cup with an eight-wicket demolition of Oman.

Needing to win emphatically to keep their hopes of pipping Scotland to a Super 8s place alive, England skittled the minnows for just 47 in fewer than 14 overs, taking just over an hour.

They then raced to their victory target from just 19 balls – the 101 deliveries to spare being the most in T20I history for a victorious side.

Adil Rashid led the way with the ball taking 4-11 from his four overs with Mark Wood and Jofra Archer claiming 3-12 apiece, with Wood passing 50 England T20 scalps in the process.

Shoaib Khan (11) was the only Oman player into double figures.

Phil Salt set the tone as he smashed the opening two balls of the reply for six but was bowled from the third ball by Bilal Khan, the opener departing with a strike rate of 400.

His replacement Will Jacks blocked the first ball and miscued one into the sky off Kaleemulla to depart from five from seven balls, but Jos Buttler walloped 24 from eight balls with a six and four fours while Johnny Bairstow rattled fours from the only two balls he faced as England romped home from the first ball of the fourth over.

The nature of the demolition has changed the picture in Group B as England’s net run rate has ballooned to 3.08, which is better than Scotland’s 2.16.

It means if England can overcome Namibia in their fourth match on Saturday evening (6pm BST) then Scotland would need to beat Australia or have their final game in the early hours of Sunday (1.30am BST) washed-out in order to qualify.
