T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan v India preview, expected line-ups, free bets and offers

The State of Play

India would have watched on with glee as Pakistan suffered a shock opening defeat via the Super Over to the USA on Thursday.

The 2009 champions struggled with the conditions at Texas’ Grand Prairie Stadium and now face the toughest test of all as they attempt to achieve the top-two spot required to advance.

Captain Azam Babar top-scored for Pakistan with 44 off 43 deliveries but conceded that he was understandably “upset” after one of the greatest shocks in the history of the tournament.

“There was moisture in the pitch,” Babar said afterwards. “It was two-paced. As professionals, we had to assess the conditions better.

“After 10 overs, we had momentum – but we lost too many wickets and the momentum was gone. As a batting unit, we need to step up in the middle overs and in the end.”

Babar says Pakistan’s approach will remain the same against India, who beat Ireland by eight wickets in New York a day earlier.

“The plan is simple,” he explained. “We try to hit yorkers and we are not changing any plans.

“The ball is reversing and our bowlers are very accurate, so our play will not be any different.”

Rohit Sharma scored 52 and Rishabh Pant an unbeaten 36 for India, with Hardik Pandya taking four wickets and Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh two each.

The immediate form of these sides might give India fans little cause for concern but there is a doubt over Sharma’s fitness to play after the 37-year-old retired hurt against Ireland and was then hit on the thumb during a practice session on Friday.

Sharma hit back-to-back sixes as he surpassed 1,000 runs at the tournament and is thought to have been withdrawn because of a shoulder problem.

Expected line-ups

India: Sharma (c), Kohli, Pant (wk), Yadav, Dube, Pandya, Jadeja, Patel, Bumrah, Singh, Siraj

Pakistan: Azam (c), Ayub, Iftikhar Ahmed, Azam Khan (wk), Zaman, Usman Khan, Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Afridi, Amir

How to watch

Sky have the rights to show the T20 World Cup to UK viewers in 2024 and will broadcast every game live. Coverage gets underway on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket from 3pm UK time.

In India, the games can be streamed on Disney + Hotstar app and website. They are also available across the Star Sports Network.

Prediction

A glamour fixture at any stage of a tournament, meetings between these teams always capture the imagination but rarely result in anything but misery for Pakistan.

India have won six of their seven meetings at the T20 World Cup and an upset looks beyond Gary Kirsten’s side, who also lost the first game of a three-match series against Ireland earlier this year.

The 2022 World Cup edition of the match was a thriller, India reaching the required 160 off the final ball with the considerable help of Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 82 off 53 balls.
